Kids
Let's all be honest with ourselves: Kids are a pain in the ass. I hear some parents talk about how having children is their greatest accomplishment and how rewarding they find it. Those people evidently haven't done much with their lives. Having kids is like having a portable prison that you get to take with you where ever you go. You can never leave. You are tethered to them by virtue of their dependence on you (and a concern that harm will come to them) until they are old enough to gain a small amount of independence at which point the tether changes. At that point you are tethered to the because you fear harm will come to your home and property. One you become a parent a responsible person is like and indentured servant to their own decisions.
Speaking of decisions... In addition to the prison of the caregiver, as parent's we also enter into financial obligations that will imprison us for far longer than the kids themselves. We convince ourselves that we need a bigger house with a bigger yard and in order to get those things we take on bigger mortgages. Now we are saddled with a 30 year commitment for something else that we have to maintain and look after. It's a lose / lose situation.
